Behind the Blog (12): Night Owl By Nature

BTB4

Behind The Blog is a meme to help bloggers connect their life and interests to the content showcased on their blog. The co-hosts Faye Kathe and Melissa will provide a different topic, idea, or question every week that bloggers can relate to themselves and the books, films, or media they find interesting!

Every day, a country celebrates a holiday. Every. Single. Day. However, on the twenty-seventh of July every year, Finland celebrates something unique: National Sleepy Head Day, during which people in a household throw the latest sleeper (or the last to wake up) into the sea. How long do you sleep? Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Generally speaking, I'm a night owl. I have been, ever since I can remember. I was one of those kids who used to stay up late at night hiding under the covers with a flashlight so that I could read.

I don't know what it is, but I love staying up late into the night. I think I just like the quietness and the peace of the late night hours. I get a lot done at night. In college, I used to write all my major papers at night. That's probably why I did so well on them. I also had a tendency to procrastinate because I thought some of my best ideas came to me under the pressure/rush of a deadline. I also think that really good ideas come to me at night, so the combination of the two probably explains why I wrote decent papers.

This very blog was named with my night owl tendencies in mind. I'm often up until at least midnight,  most nights past midnight as well. In fact, it's quarter to midnight as I'm writing this.

That said, that doesn't mean that I can't get up early in the morning too. I've done it plenty of times, for classes, appointments, work etc. And there are some mornings when I'm up before the sun, for no particular reason. Nowadays, I'm usually up sometime between 7:00 and 9:30. On the rare occasion that I sleep later than that, I'll only sleep til 10:30 or so.

Books Tie In:

A good series that ties in to this post is the Midnighter's series by Scott Westerfield. I read this series last year and loved it.

I am definitely a night owl. Some nights I stay up until the sun comes up. Like last night. I had a really long day and I didn't get to sleep until 8 am. I made sure to wake up around 2:30 though so that won't happen again tonight.

But I love staying up late. I wouldn't have it any other way. Oftentimes it's the only time I have to spend by myself. And I treasure my alone time doing whatever--reading, blogging, chatting on Twitter.

Great post.

Thanks Kara!

I think I use night as my alone time too, now that you pointed that out.

Excellent post. You must continue to offer excellent resources and content like you have been offering. I will most likely stop by again in the future.
