Behind the Blog 16: The Soundtrack to My Life

BTB4

Behind The Blog
is a meme to help bloggers connect their life and interests to the content showcased on their blog. The co-hosts Faye Kathe and Melissa will provide a different topic, idea, or question every week that bloggers can relate to themselves and the books, films, or media they find interesting!

Have you ever wondered what the soundtrack to your life would be? Which artists would play for the major events? Would certain artists/tracks be reserved for particular emotions?

In relation to books:

Have you ever read a book that had an accompanying soundtrack? If you could pick a theme song for your favorite book what would it be and why?

I've put a lot of thought into this very topic lately. I first thought about it when I was putting together my boyfriend's 30th birthday present a couple of weeks ago. When I put together his present, I made him a list of all the songs that had been number one for the week of his birthday for each year that he's been alive. (I would have made him a CD, but half of the songs really aren't his style of music, so I doubt he would have listened to half of it)

It was quite the interesting mix for a 30 year span in music, and it got me thinking. What would be the soundtrack to my life?

I actually wrote a post on this very topic earlier this week over on Twifcoo

Music always seems to be at the undercurrent of certain activities, don't you think? For me, I always like to have my ipod when I'm out running general errands, to have some entertainment for the bus rides. Or when I go on walks. It's always nice to have music to motivate me to just keep going a little bit further.

Have you ever noticed that when you exercise with music, you seem to do whatever activity your doing in time with the music. If you're walking and a slow song comes on, you slow down. Then when the next song is one with a faster beat, you start to pick up the pace? Weird how that works isn't it?

Here's a small list of songs/artists that I think would be playing during certain emotions. It's the same as my list in the post on Twificoo with a few additions that I thought of after sending that article off to be posted.

Feeling mellow: Anything by Coldplay
Feeling Happy: Any dance music
Needing to burn some excess energy or work out.: A mix of pump it up songs, with artists like Lady Gaga, TI, Madonna, Paul Oakenfold etc.
Melancholy/Sad: Letting the Cables Sleep by Bush, Coming Home by Dallas Green
Angry: Something dark, and heavy, maybe some Silverchair
Wanting to be empowered: Adele,
Song that makes me cry: The Sunscreen song narrated by Baz Luhrman
Makes me Feel Nostalgic: Graduation (Friends Forever) by Vitamin C.

I could probably go on and on, covering every emotion under the sun, but I’ll just stop there.

It's probably weird that the Sunscreen song makes me cry, because it's meant to be an empowering song, but there are just some points in that song that really hit close to home for me. That song has a lot of good advice, that I actually think I need to start following. Including the advice of wearing sunscreen, since I've gotten at least 4 or 5 sunburns this summer.

Books Tie in:

Sing You Home

Sing You Home is the only book I've ever read that had it's own soundtrack that came with the book. I have noticed lately though that more and more authors are talking about the soundtracks that should accompany their books and are soliciting ideas for these tracks from their readers.

What about you? What songs or artists would be on the soundtrack to your life, or to your favorite book?

What a fun idea! I mainly listen to country music so I'm pretty sure my life soundtrack would be nothing but that. And my books definitely have a country soundtrack--many country songs inspire certain parts of my novels:-)

I feel like I really need to expand the breadth of music I listen to. That soundtrack for your boyfriend sounds like such a fantastic idea - sooo interesting. Dance music is great for when you're feeling happy, but I have to be careful where I listen to it or I start bopping along without realising it, which is slightly embarrassing when I'm out in public... Do you have any absolute all-time favourite songs?

This was fun! I love the music to go with emotions. It's true that when I play fast music while I exercise I go as fast as the music lol. Great post!

@Kimberly:

That is awesome that the songs you listen to influence your novels. :)

@Alexandrasscribblings:
I bop along to dance music all the time! Or even worse I start singing along to it. Oooh my absolute favorite songs...I hadn't thought about it. I'll have to think about it and let you know.

@HarleyBear Books:
Thanks! Glad you had fun with this. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who goes faster when they exercise to music, lol.

I feel awkward because I barely recognised any of the artists in your soundtrack :P

But I like that you have set songs for different moods. I totally get there. Just like different genres too. Right now I'm listening to some mellow Christina Perri because I'm in a sort of soft, mellow mood but earlier today I was listening to Reel Big Fish because I was in a more BOOM mood :p

Also, that was a lovely thing to do for your boyfriend :)

Thanks! The project for him actually came out really well. :)

I'll have to try listening to some Christina Perri and Reel Big Fish sometime. :)
