Guest Post:

Where I Live and How it Effects My Writing

I live in Los Angeles, the land of infinite possibilities. At least, that is how I view it. My younger sister, who still lives in northern Calif. where we grew up, views it completely differently. She looks at all of the beautiful homes, cars, and tanned, toned bodies and thinks she’ll never be able to obtain any of that. I look at it and know that it’s obtainable. I mean it’s all around me so it must be, right?

There is an undercurrent of creativity that travels throughout the city and that is inspirational to me. You walk into the grocery store and there is Gavin Rossdale buying the same canola oil you are buying and then you go to the Coffee Bean up the street and there’s the guy you watched on “Whitney” last night. When I go to back-to-school night for my kids, the parents are sprinkled with actors, directors, writers, etc., and these aren’t even the private schools, this is public school.

Everywhere you look people are pursuing their dreams. It really is true that nine times out of ten your waiter in any given restaurant is really working to become an established actor, musician or artist. The ones who aren’t waiting to be discovered are still doing what they want to be doing. They may not love their job, but they are generally clear on why they are doing it.
Obviously, not everyone in Los Angeles is happy. I’m not trying to claim there isn’t a healthy dose of disappointment. We have problems like any big city. The difference is that here you can be down one day and on top of the world the next. Sure, it’s a roller coaster and there are no guarantees, but I am reminded on a daily basis that dreams really do come true.
