Behind the Blog 15: Summer Fun

BTB4

Behind The Blog is a meme to help bloggers connect their life and interests to the content showcased on their blog. The co-hosts Faye Kathe and Melissa will provide a different topic, idea, or question every week that bloggers can relate to themselves and the books, films, or media they find interesting!

As summer slowly winds down, I thought it might be nice to reflect on the sunny season. Did you take any fun trips this summer? Make an amazing memory you’d like to share? What’s your favorite summer activity? In relation to books: What are some good “beach reads” you’d recommend for these last few weekends of summer?

For me, summer was relatively simple. I did go on a trip, but it was more for personal reasons than recreation.

I don't think there are any particularly "amazing" memories, but there are plenty of fun times that I've had. I went to the beach a couple of times, went to the fair, went to an apple festival. I also go to see the Picasso exhibit in Toronto, which was very interesting, and I feel lucky to have gotten to see it.

My favorite summer activity is swimming. I love to swim. I'd stay in the water all day if I could. I also love reading in the summer sun, but reading is really an all seasons activity. Hopefully I'll do a little more reading in the sun before the rain comes.

Books/Media:

I've got a few summery beach reads to recommend. Let me know if you've read any of these and what you think of them.

Silver Girl

This is a really good story with love, friendship, loss and a summer on the beach.

One Summer

This is the story of a family that comes together after a bout of sickness and a major tragedy. The beach doesn't heal all wounds, but it can help.

Those are just a few of the great summer/beach reads that I've read in the past, there are lots more. What beach reads would you recommend?

Behind the Blog (13) Rocky Road

BTB4

Behind The Blog
is a meme to help bloggers connect their life and interests to the content showcased on their blog. The co-hosts Faye Kathe and Melissa will provide a different topic, idea, or question every week that bloggers can relate to themselves and the books, films, or media they find interesting!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Everyone loves ice cream right? What's your favorite flavor? What's your best memory associated with ice cream? Have you ever tried a flavor that you absolutely hated?
In relation to books: Do you like characters that are plain, simple "vanilla" types, or do you like characters that are a little more complex and flavorful? What flavor of ice cream would you characterize your all time favorite character as and why?

I actually have a few favorite ice cream flavors. I really like Rocky Road and Cherries Jubilee. I love all things cherry and all things chocolate, so if there were a way to mix the two together, I'd be in ice cream heaven. There's Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia which comes close, but it's missing the walnuts and marshmallows.

I can't think of a specific memory that I associate with ice cream it's more the feeling I get when I eat it. Ice cream  makes me feel like a kid again. It's a fun treat, and it reminds me of summer, birthday parties, late night sleepovers. It's just one of those iconic foods of childhood.

I really don't care for root beer ice cream. You'd think it would be good, since rootbeer floats are delicious, but it's really not.To me, root beer ice cream just tastes like soap. I don't like Mocha Almond Fudge, (or any coffee flavored ice cream) either. Mainly because I don't like coffee, but to my credit I have at least tried these every couple of years to see if I have grown to like them. (I haven't.)

Books Tie in:

As for character types, I like both simple and complex characters, it all depends on the book. If I had to assign a flavor to my favorite character, it'd be Rocky Road to Harry Potter. Literally, for the rocky road he's had to go through in life, fighting against Voldemort. And because Rocky Road is comprised of some of the same elements that Harry possesses. Chocolate is sweet, but can be dark, and so can Harry. The walnuts of rocky road resemble the obstacles that he's had to overcome. And the marshmallows are the sweet sentimental touches that J.K. Rowling added that he gets to experience, like seeing his parents in the Mirror of Erised to name just one.

What about you, do you like plain, or flavorful characters?
